Nuclear Waste Policy and the Future of Used Reactor Fuel

A briefing and discussion
Monday, November 16, 2009
11:00 am – 11:50 am
Dirksen Senate Building Room G11
Washington, D.C.
Ongoing challenges with managing high-level radioactive waste from U.S. nuclear power reactors impact energy, environmental, climate, security, and financial policy planning.
The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 calls for deep burial of spent nuclear fuel, but road-blocks to licensing Yucca Mountain or another geologic repository mean spent fuel will likely remain stored at operating or decommissioned reactor sites dispersed throughout a majority of U.S. states well into the future.
Drawing on broad-based input from nuclear engineering expertise around the country, this session will examine possible legislative and regulatory changes that could make the current practice of on-site nuclear fuel storage financially viable and safe.
