Champaign, Ill.—Dr. Stephen P. Cohen, Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, will present a series of talks to the university and local community on Thursday, October 15th and Friday, October 16th, 2009.
Cohen, a former professor of Political Science and History at the University of Illinois, is an expert on security, politics, and nuclear proliferation issues in South Asia, particularly India and Pakistan. He is the author, co-author or editor of over twelve books, the most recent being Four Crises and a Peace Process: American Engagement in South Asia (2007) and The Idea of Pakistan (2004). In 2004, the World Affairs Councils of America named him one of America's five hundred most influential people in the area of foreign policy.
Cohen's engagements will begin on Thursday at 10:00 am with an appearance on the WILL-AM radio program Focus 580, during which he will discuss current developments in Pakistan and Afghanistan with host David Inge and respond to listener call-ins.
Next, in an ACDIS special seminar on Thursday, October 15th at noon in the Illini Union General Lounge (room 210), he will present "The Irrelevance of India's Rise as a Military Power." This talk will address current challenges to India's ability to mobilize its military power, and provide an analysis of how India's emergence as a 'great power' has shaped its relations with China, Pakistan, and the United States.
On Friday, October 16th at noon, Cohen will present a University YMCA Friday Forum lecture entitled, "The Importance of Being Pakistan, and What Should the US (and India) Do About It?" He will discuss the significance of achieving a balanced assessment of Pakistan's future, and its implications for U.S. policy in the region.
Dr. Cohen's talks are free and open to the public. They are co-sponsored by the Program in Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security (ACDIS), the University YMCA, and the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
