Summary

Reverberations continue from the revolutions that swept across Eastern Europe in the latter half of 1989. Although the road ahead is unknown, it is certain that the future will little resemble the post-World War II framework in which we had become all too comfortable. Profound and irreversible change has occurred.

It is fitting, therefore, that this issue of Swords and Ploughshares is devoted to articles by scholars at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in which they analyze the significance of the changes that have taken place in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union and then describe some of the unfinished business that remains.
