ACDIS Undergraduate International Security Research Opportunity

The Program in Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security (ACDIS) is pleased to announce a competition for undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). The competition will facilitate the opportunity for UIUC undergraduates to work with a faculty member during the 2009-2010 academic year on a guided individual research project. The project must produce a high quality poster (on a single printed document) outlining their research and findings to be displayed at a special event on Mom's Day weekend, April 16-18, 2010. Students will each receive $200 to assist their research, including the printing of the poster, upon receipt of documentation of expenditures. In addition, if enough posters are received, cash prizes of $150 and $100 will be given to the posters judged to be the best and runner-up, respectively.

The student will be expected to choose a member of the UIUC faculty with interests in international security who will be willing to offer advice and guidance on the project. The faculty member will be eligible to receive a $100 research fund stipend. The faculty member may require the student to enroll in independent study credits as part of the relationship.

Students may choose any topic relevant to international security including: terrorism; nuclear proliferation; biosecurity; energy security; civil wars; arms control; international peacekeeping; or the foreign policy practices and decisions of particular countries. Students are encouraged to consider ACDIS faculty members (see "Core Faculty" in the ACDIS Directory) as their project advisors, though any UIUC faculty member may be approached.

Up to ten student awards will be made. The award decision will be made by the ACDIS Director, Associate Director, and Executive Committee and all decisions are final.

Applicants should download an application cover sheet and submit the completed form to the ACDIS office. Additionally, applicants should submit a one page description of their research project, a resume, an unofficial transcript, and a brief letter or e-mail from a UIUC faculty member stating their agreement to serve as advisor for this project (faculty letter may be sent separately from student application).
