ACDIS Undergraduate Travel Scholarships
for Internships and Study Abroad Research in International Security
The Program in Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security (ACDIS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) announces the availability of scholarship awards in amounts up to $500 to support undergraduates engaged in an approved internship or study abroad research program to begin during summer or fall 2010 or spring 2011.
These scholarships are designed primarily to subsidize student engagement in internships abroad relevant to international security, and applications fitting this description have the greatest chance of success. However, students seeking funding assistance for internship placements in the United States with a significant international security component, or traditional study abroad programs that include a significant amount of independent research on a topic pertaining to international security are also eligible for support.
Eligibility and Criteria for Selection
Applicants must be undergraduates in good standing at UIUC. In addition, preference for these competitive awards will be given to students who:
- have demonstrated interest in international security through undergraduate coursework and/or extracurricular activities
- have strong academic records (cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher)
- have upper division (junior or senior) standing at the time of the internship or study abroad program
Application Procedures
Prospective applicants should download an application cover sheet. Together with the completed application form, students will be required to submit:
- A brief description (300 words or less) of the proposed activity to be supported
- A brief description (300 words or less) of how the proposed activity relates to the student’s current academic curriculum and career plans
- A recommendation from a UIUC faculty member assessing the student’s suitability for the proposed activity (faculty letter may be sent separately from student application materials)
- Unofficial or official transcripts of undergraduate coursework
- Information about the program in which the student is planning to participate (e.g., web print-out, original or photocopy of brochure)
Deadline and Procedures for Application Submission and Awards Notification
For full consideration, all application materials must be submitted by February 26, 2010 to:

Internship/Study Abroad Placement Services and Other Resources
ACDIS does not offer counseling services to assist students regarding internship placements. ACDIS has, however, developed web listings of over 100 organizations offering internships relevant to international security. Students are encouraged to consult these listings in the ACDIS Internship Database. Inclusion on the listings does not constitute an endorsement from ACDIS, nor will preference for this award necessarily be given to students participating in programs at those organizations.
Students applying for support to travel on a study abroad program are strongly encouraged to consult the UIUC Study Abroad Office to take advantage of their wide range of resources and advising services. For more information, see the Study Abroad Office web site. Applicants may also find useful resources and services about additional sources of support for international travel through the Office of Prestigious Scholarships.
