The Summer Workshop in International Security is a week-long intensive summer workshop about a theme in international security for undergraduate students. This unique program introduces students to scholars, policymakers, and experts in the field of security studies. Through this program, students have an opportunity to interact with leaders in security, actively learn about security issues, and receive credit for their coursework.

The 2016 Summer Workshop was reprogrammed to concentrate on geologic disposal of nuclear reactor fuel discharges, with a concentration on reactors in Illinois and adjacent states. In light of recent announcements of nuclear reactor shut downs in the United States and proposed additional shut downs in Illinois, this is a timely topic. Seven students and three faculty members participated in the June 27–July 1 workshop.
