Profs. Novak and Di Fulvio at the Program in Arms Control & Domestic and International Security (ACDIS) are collaborating with Dr. Shahbazi and his team at Argonne National Laboratory on a forward-looking project to improve how we monitor and protect nuclear materials in advanced reactor systems, particularly molten salt reactors (MSRs). This effort is part of the Advanced Reactor International Safeguards Engagement (ARISE) initiative sponsored by National Nuclear Security Administration.  The project aims to develop monitoring tools that are accurate, efficient, and easy to integrate into reactor designs. These tools would allow for remote oversight and real-time tracking, making it easier for international agencies and governments to verify peaceful use of nuclear technology while reducing the need for frequent on-site inspections. This project supports ACDIS’s mission to bridge the gap between technical innovation and policy, ensuring that as nuclear technology evolves, so do the tools to keep it safe, secure, and in line with global nonproliferation commitments.
